Sorelle Povere di Santa Chiara a film by Nina Danino,
12 mins, 16mm, black and white, silent. 2016
Official Selection and Jury Awards: Venice Film Week 29 August- 4 September 2016.
Besides being an important figure in contemporary experimental cinema, as a film director in numerous works Nina Danino has explored historical issues and questions of identity related to Gibraltar, her home. Hence the invitation to produce a work for San Marino acquires an even greater value within the general framework of the project. The artist worked independently in relation to the purely filmic language but following certain strands that over the years have characterized her specific research in film, such as the survey of the theme of the sacred (The Silence is Baroque, Communion), or the development of stories and research devoted to female figures (Stabat Mater, Now I’m Yours) and the dimension of an intimate and private narrative (First Memory, Apparitions). The result is a complex research project that recounts the small religious community of the Poor Sisters, nuns in the Monastery of Santa Chiara in San Marino. Silence, singing, prayer, the sacred space and the life of the sisters are combined in a mixed-media installation with interviews, documents, texts and an amazing sound installation with the singing of the nuns at its heart: at once individual and choral, like their community life.
