Viafarini DOCVA, in collaboration with Little Constellation, organizes Katalogos, a three-days workshop dedicated to the development of the projects of the artists selected by A Natural Oasis Summer School - Provoc’arte 1991, Hypothesis for an archive, which took place last summer in the municipality of Montegiardino in the Republic of San Marino. The goal of the workshop Katalogos is to verify the development of A Natural Oasis, a stage-based path in relationships, study, travel and research, which after San Marino will continue at the Garrison Library of Gibraltar – UK and at Saint James Cavallier in the Republic of Malta. The aim of this project is the production of a special work for the XVII Biennial of Young Artists, MEDITERRANEA17, which will take place in Milan in October 2015.

In these three days of work at Viafarini DOCVA in Milan, the young artists selected and involved in the project - Sarah Capesius, Martina Conti, Viola Conti, Lito Kattou & Leontios Toumpouris, Alessandro Di Pietro, Katrín I. Jonsdóttir Hjördísardóttir Hirt, Nico Macina, Francesca Mangion, Orestis Mavroudis, Mnemoscape (Elisa Adami, Alessandra Ferrini), Michela Pozzi, Giacomo Raffaelli, Jacopo Rinaldi coming from Cyprus, Great Britain, Greece, Italy, Iceland, Luxemburg, Malta and San Marino -will have the opportunity to expand and renew their educational paths.

Therefore, Katalogos is an intermediate step in A Natural Oasis and will refer to the process of collection, enumeration and organization of archive material and documents for the construction of systems and, more generally, of narrative possibilities. This focus can be included in the more comprehensive practices of archive analysis and display, which are, in a wider sense, the analysis goal of the entire project.

Lecture by Francesco Bertocco on the exhibition Francesco Bertocco - Alberto Grifi curated by Simone Frangi in the venue of Viafarini DOCVA from 25 November 2014 to 23 January 2015.
Themes:
1 – Introduction to work by Alberto Grifi. The pretended body, and the concept of the readymade in cinema. The readymade as appropriation and legitimization inside art history and found footage as a grammar practice of cinema. This part, although presented as historiographic, will be actually used to outline a definition of found footage, which will help me to introduce the points linking my work to Grifi’s.
2 - Allegory by Francesco Bertocco and The pretended body by Alberto Grifi. The linking elements between the two works where The pretended body by Alberto Grifi is taken as an investigation model in my work. In this context, Bertocco will explain how this film was conceived and what my research is about.
3 – The body and the archive. A section dedicated to three “re-found” bodies of contemporary history brought together and related to three films, with which they directly or indirectly construct a network of references.
a) The (Hollywood) mythology of the Black Dahlia and the (dying) myth of Kennedy, in The Extraordinary Report by Bruce Connor. A broken body and a structural film which reconstructs the dying body. In both cases body exhumation and transcendence are present in artistic appropriation. The surrealistic inspiration behind the killing of the Black Dahlia (cadavre exquis) and the eternal return of the event through the cornerstone of film language: editing.
b) The finding of the Riace Bronzes and the found footage of the ruins. The intact body of ruins stands as a paradox in time experience. The exceptional finding of the Bronzes acts as an eternal ruin inserted in historical awareness. In no place it remains by Maria Giovanna Cicciari is a film which represents itself as found, shot now but destined to propose itself as indefinite and anachronistic. A film set in the ruins of the Calabria region where the Bronzes themselves act towards us to preserve our modernity.
c) A conclusion on the possible relationship between the body and the archive and its real contemporary representations in emerging or historical/experimental audiovisual performances.
